A message from George Costacos in view of the sudden passing of Actors' Equity President Patrick Quinn

Patrick Quinn and George Costacos at the Broadway Strike of 2003

"I had the honor to be introduced to Patrick Quinn by my good friend and Actors' Equity Communications Director David Lotz, during the Broadway Strike of 2003. Patrick instantly won me over with his aura of leadership, professionalism, spirit, warmth, charm, and irreverent quick wit -- to mention only a handful of his magnetic qualities. Little did I know then, the many examples Patrick would come to set for me.

That day on the Broadway Strike, the internationally circulated French newspaper
Le Monde asked to interview and quote me, as the only actor from our entire union. Patrick made me feel that my individual feelings expressed our collective spirit as union actors on strike, and gave me one of his inimitable winks as I spoke to the foreign press on behalf of us all.

Then when I became the only member of Actors' Equity invited from the USA to perform in the Opening Ceremony of the historic Athens 2004 Olympic Games, Patrick's enormous enthusiasm as President added to mine, for being the sole proud representative of our union all the way around the world, performing before a live global audience of 4 billion TV viewers -- as if 75,000 spectators seated in the Olympic Stadium was not a large enough audience!

Patrick's words of praise in the press remains a treasured keepsake I proudly share here with all who loved him, for it proves once more his generous support of his union colleagues and fellow artists:
"(George's) spirit is so strong and it carries you away. An admirable talent, which he has the ability to share," adds Patrick Quinn, president of Actors' Equity, which has the motto of "if it's not Equity, it's not Broadway."
-- MEN Magazine

Patrick's emails throughout my Summer of Olympic rehearsals kept me in stitches, the front page story that followed in Equity News about my performance was a huge honor in front of the whole union, and his personal welcome upon my return to New York -- all remain treasured memories from that once-in-a-lifetime performance experience.

I am deeply saddened to hear about Patrick's untimely loss. I add my condolences to his family and our collective family of friends and colleagues. Yet even in leaving us early, Patrick Quinn set another inspiring example for us all: to live large. Please join me in saluting a wonderful human being and joy-maker who will be greatly missed and fondly remembered. Thank You."

George Costacos profiled in The Belfast Telegraph: Title: "It's George the second: Latest patron of the George Best Foundation ... a Greek actor called George Best." Article by Maureen Coleman. Photo Captions: "Namesake Broadway actor George Costacos' web address now hosts the George Best Foundation website." Photograph by Colm Lenaghan.

"A GREEK actor who shared his name with George Best today told how honoured he was to be invited to Belfast as patron of the new foundation.

...George, who is a star of Broadway and the West End, came to hear of the Belfast Best and started to take an interest in him. ...George discovered he shared more than just a name with the former Manchester United star. Like him, George had suffered from liver disease, but was saved from the illness within seconds of death. ...George the actor was acquainted with the story of the other Best and had also become a fan, so he was devastated to learn of his death last November.

..."When I began getting e-mails from people who thought I was the footballer, I realised that this must be a very special person," he said. "But I had been thinking about going back to my original name and thought this would be the perfect catalyst. ...Then, out of the blue, he was contacted by the George Best Foundation and asked if he would consider selling his internet domain. Despite offers over the years from football fans keen to purchase the domain, George had held onto it, so he could eventually donate it to the other George Best.

..."I had no intention of selling it, it was theirs and I told them that. ...When I was asked to be international patron of the George Best Foundation, I was delighted and honoured. The foundation will be able to fund research into liver disease and hopefully help save lives and I'm very proud to be involved with it."
